Dear Tony:
\JStrange goings on!! First, as the enclosure states, I'm applying
to Santa Clara University for a teaching position this fall and if
you could write as strong a letter as possible for me I'd appreciate it.
More importantly, I seem to be growing up. These last few months I've
had reality rubbed in my face. The net effect is I've finally decided it's
time to quit screwing around and go back and get my PhD. I really enjoy
teaching and have some very strong opinions about the way computer science
education should be done. There is absolutely no way that I can do anything
about either
without a degree. So I see Santa Clara as a one year thing until I can get
back in school. I have screwed around too long at Stanford and would have to
begin again from scratch. If necessary I'll do it. I would also not be
averse to moving (it currently is not clear whether my marriage is going to survive,
anyway). So would there be a possibility of working out an arrangement
with your department to teach and get my degree? I have gone through very
significant changes in the last three months and finally do believe
that I have some direction in life.
